Introducing Atonal Apparel

MWLBIG

Atonal Apparel is committed to representing the progressive artistic

lifestyles of today, by printing quality garments with the work of

unpublished artists in an effort to help publicize them. It is an

effort to fill a void in the market for such quality at an accessible

price point.

The slogan is BE THE CHANGE because I’m trying to break the barrier

between logos being repeated over and over again with no substance to

the garment. I’m also trying to help get unpublished people trying to

pursue a career in an art based field out there, which is the opposite

of what other companies do. Everybody else only seeks help from

established artists and might not give them recognition. I’m changing

that one step at a time.

Here are some words with its creator:

Give me some things you would like to change in the next 6 months: Six months down the road from now I’m hoping that the first series of prints will have sold and can look into printing a second release.

Why should people support your efforts: They don’t have to.

What makes your clothing line unique: We don’t constantly repeat logos and call it a clothing company like some bigger name brands out there. The designs on our garments are created by unpublished artists in an effort to help publicize them. Other companies only approach people who are established and have built a name for themselves; we’re helping artists build their name. That’s where the slogan BE THE CHANGE came from, Atonal Apparel is an effort to change everything you once thought a clothing company had to be.

Where are you based and how does your environment affect your designs: We’re based out of North Bay, Ontario. The community is a huge influence in what is pumped out product wise because everything is done locally, so the company thrives off the community and is making an effort to help the community thrive in return. North Bay seems to have a pretty diverse arts culture but nobody out of our spectrum seems to know that.

Since you are a new line what can the people expect from you in the future: I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.

Wash Pahpin x A Brand With No Name

What do you call a  brand with no name and what do you call a man with no name? This concept was put together by the young, Jakobi Mclemore, owner of ”thebrandwithnoname”. The idea behind this label is unique and the message you see in the clothing is executed with the same unique style. I came across Kobi and his brand via Phil of Dertbag on the Internet. I don’t choose these interviews just to do them, I choose them because I firmly believe in what the person is doing. Just look at the Dertbag interview; before everything took off. There’s no doubt in my mind that with this powerful concept ”thebrandwithnoname” can be something powerful in the streetwear industry. So please enjoy this interview, I know you will.

First off state your name and where you are from.

My Name is Jakobi Mclemore. I’m from Houston, Texas. But I currently reside in New Jersey.

You have a great concept and name, what lead you to this?

It was almost a year back when I came up with “thebrandwithnoname” as a last minute decision at about 1 in the morning. I mean I always believed in equality, so thebrandwithnoname stands for a man living in America and succeeding without having to make a name for himself. Like being successful, as in doing what you want to do for a living without any worries or regrets and being happy. Not getting all of the money in the world.

Why a clothing line?

I decided to start a clothing line because I was always into clothes, because I felt it expressed myself, so I made thebrandwithnoname into a clothing brand so that everyone could not see through my eyes just through threads.

When creating a new design for your label, what do you do first?

Well, first before I start anything I study heavily on the topic that I am targeting at for the season, but when I actually start the design, I want it to be as simple as possible, but have as much substance as a book.

Your products have some deep meanings behind them. I recently saw the “Save Us T.” Why do you feel it is important to have a meaning behind what you create?

I feel that without substance, whatever you are trying to put out is not needed. I feel like I can spread my little knowledge to help people see where I’m coming from. I wouldn’t want to be staring at a picture with a bunch of lines that may look good, but means nothing. If that makes sense.

How important is it to you for people to actually understand the message behind your designs?

Very important. I think most of what I put out just seems like words or a little design to most people. I don’t really think people know what most of what I put out means until explained to them, which I like because it gives me the chance to enlighten.

Are you ever afraid people just won’t get the message of a t-shirt sometimes?

Not at all. If they do not take the time to try to understand, its not for them. I can’t stress interest upon them.

What is your vision for the future for Brand With No Name?

Still putting out simple things: oxfords, basic tees, pants, etc., but still having the same background as we do now.

When did you start NONAMEMUSICCO?

In 2010 by myself and I find myself in 2011 still doing everything by myself, which seems like alot of work for a 17 year old, but I like it because I get to learn everyday.

How has the relationship with your father shaped you as a person?

Mos def. I’m just a mirror image of him. Him becoming my business partner for nonamemusicco is great because we have the same perspectives and agree upon everything we shoot for.

How did you meet Phil aka Screech from Dertbag?

I honestly think it was through Facebook. It was a, “I like your brand” “I like your brand too” “oh you’re only 16″ thing and from there we just clicked. We’ve been good friends ever since and support each other on everything we put out. No competition involved.

What’s your take on the rise of Odd Future?

It’s kinda weird I guess, since I’ve been listening to Tyler since 07-08 and us becoming friends in 09. But I’m proud on all of their success and want them to keep pushing out quality music through all of this success.

How has the reception of Brand With No Name been thus far?

It has been great getting a lot of feedback from people I looked up to, feedback from kids that say they look up to me and from countries that I’ve never even been too. Shipping all over the US feels great and I want to continue doing this for the rest of my life.

Any thoughts or shoutouts?

Thanks for this interview man, I want to shouout my family, noname music co, my brothers Asa Davis and Ozell Moss, Mike, Okills, Phil, Tyler, Chris Ali, everybody that has supported me and if I left anyone out I’m sorry.

Thanks!
